WHAT IS CRYO TECHNOLOGY IN JAY CUSHIONS?

Jay fluid with Cryo technology is innovative wheelchair cushion materials that actively cools a user’s seated skin surface for up to 8 hours or more. It evenly distributes pressure, reduce shear a lower the risk of moisture. Core technology, unlike other standard cushions which surface rises the temperature leading to skin breakdown, lowers the skin surface temperature as little as 1°C preventing skin breakdown. Cryo Technology was engineered to mildly cool the skin within a therapeutic temperature range of 28°C - 35°C. The cooler skin surface temperature has the added benefit of reducing the likelihood of moisture associated with localized perspiration.

CAUSES OF PRESSURE INJURIES

According to the research, a multitude of factors increases the risk of a pressure injury, four risk factors have been identified that are directly correlated to wheelchair seating: pressure, shear, temperature, and moisture. From the past decade, seating products have focused on reducing the risk of pressure and shear on the seating surface. Gradually, researchers are finding that temperature plays a significant role in skin breakdown.

MAJORITY OF WHEELCHAIR USERS ARE AFFECTED BY PRESSURE INJURIES

Each year, up to hundreds of spinal cord injury (SCI) patients who use a wheelchair in the United States are diagnosed with a pressure injury. These pressure injuries are so prevalent in the complex rehab technology space that approximately 95% of SCI patients will develop a pressure injury over their lifetime. JAY Clinical Seating's top priority is to lessen risk factors attributable to seating that leads to these unbearable injuries.

PROVIDING ONE OF THE HIGHEST DEGREES
OF SKIN PROTECTION ON THE MARKET

Cryo Technology addresses all four risks associated with pressure injuries.

PRESSURE

1

JAY Fluid with Cryo Technology evenly distributes pressure across the seating surface.

SHEAR

2

4-way stretch Lycra cover reduces shear forces between the cushion cover and JAY Fluid with Cryo Technology insert.

TEMPERATURE

3

JAY Fluid with Cryo Technology lowers the seated skin temperature into the therapeutic temperature range for up to eight hours.

MOISTURE

4

Cooler skin temperatures reduce the likelihood of perspiration on the seated surface.

HOW CRYO FLUID WORKS?

JAY Fluid with Cryo Technology has millions of microbeads filled with paraffin wax which melts at a set temperature. Because skin temperature is warmer than the ambient temperature of the Cryo Fluid, heat from the skin is actively transferred into the fluid. This results in a lowering of the seated skin temperature within therapeutic range.

JAY Fluid with Cryo Technology also utilizes graphite due to its high capacity to effectively diffuse heat throughout the fluid. This heat diffusion continues to pull heat from the skin until all microbeads have melted, resulting in a therapeutic cooling effect which can last up to eight hours. Cryo Fluid microbeads naturally re-solidify after the fluid returns to ambient temperature.

CRYO TECHNOLOGY NOW AVAILABLE FOR BOTH MANUAL AND POWER WHEELCHAIRS

Jay Fusion with Cryo Technology

CryoFluid in Jay Fusion cushion reduces the risk of pressure injuries or skin breakdown. CryoFluid is now being offered along JAY Flow Fluid to provide more options for skin protection. The Fusion wheelchair cushion adapts to each individual's shape, adjusts to sitting positions, and ensures proper fluid placement beneath bony prominences to help protect the skin from breakdown.
