Description

AlgiSite M Calcium Alginate Wound Dressing is composed of fast-gelling, high mannuronic acid fibers derived from calcium alginate, which is extracted and purified from a natural, renewable source - seaweed. When wound exudate comes into contact with Algisite M, it forms a hydrophilic gel that remains in close contact with the wound surface, helping to create and maintain a moist wound environment. Faster, cleaner dressing changes reduce nursing time because, once gelled, the dressing remains intact and strong for longer.

Features:

  • Easy to remove: When used on moderate to highly exuding wounds, the dressing forms a soft gel that does not adhere to delicate healing tissue in the wound bed. It can be easily lifted out in one piece or irrigated away with saline.
  • Conforms to wound contours: It is soft and highly conformable, allowing it to be molded, folded, or cut to accommodate a wide range of wound shapes and sizes. As the fibers gel, they maintain even closer contact with the wound surface.
  • Less fiber shed: While all fiber-based alginates may release fibers during handling, the advanced bonding technique used in Algisite M significantly reduces fiber shedding.
  • Moist wound environment: The gel formed by the interaction of exudate with alginate fibers creates a moist wound surface that helps prevent eschar formation and supports optimal healing. The dressing also allows wound contraction and gaseous exchange necessary for a healthy wound bed.
  • Highly absorbent: In vitro studies show that Algisite M can absorb up to 13 times its own weight in exudate, allowing it to remain in place for up to 7 days, depending on wound condition and exudate volume.

Indications:

For OTC applications, AlgiSite M may be used for the management of minor conditions such as:

  • Lacerations
  • Lacerations
  • Skin tears
  • Minor burns

Under the care of a healthcare professional, AlgiSite M may be used for the management of full and partial thickness wounds including:

  • Leg Ulcers
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Surgical wounds

Instructions for Use:

  1. Cleanse the wound according to standard clinical practice.
  2. Select a dressing slightly larger than the wound and place it in direct contact with the wound bed, ensuring full coverage. For deep or undermined wounds, use an alginate strip. To prevent maceration of surrounding skin, cut the dressing to wound size or fold excess material into the wound cavity.
  3. Apply using an appropriate dressing technique.
  4. Cover with a suitable secondary dressing. Wound exudate will evaporate from the gel surface; the secondary dressing should not impede this process when exudate levels are high.
  5. Change dressings daily for heavily exuding wounds, reducing to twice weekly or weekly as healing progresses.
  6. To remove, use tweezers, forceps, or a gloved hand to gently lift the dressing away. The high wet strength typically allows removal in one piece. If adhesion occurs in lightly exuding wounds, saturate with saline to facilitate removal.

Precautions:

  • Ensure all packing in cavities or sinuses is completely removed.
  • The dressing may adhere if used on very lightly exuding wounds. If removal is difficult, moisten with saline before removal.
  • Do not use on patients with a known allergy to alginates.
