Description

MIC-KEY Low Profile Jejunal Feeding Tube is recommended for patients who cannot absorb adequate nutrition through the stomach, have intestinal motility issues, gastric outlet obstruction, severe gastroesophageal reflux, are at risk of aspiration, or have had a previous esophagectomy or gastrectomy. The MIC-KEY Low-Profile Jejunal Feeding Tube can be inserted percutaneously under fluoroscopic or endoscopic guidance, or as a replacement for an existing device with an established stoma tract.

Features

  • Tapered distal tip.
  • Low-profile design.
  • Radiopaque stripes.
  • Using EnFit connectors.
  • Gastric decompression port.
  • Silicone internal retention balloon.
  • Medical-grade silicone construction.
  • Several gastric and jejunal exit ports.
  • Radiopaque weighted jejunal segment.
  • The SECUR-LOK extension set connecting method.
  • Suitable for patients who just need jejunal feeding and desire a discreet external part.
  • The exterior bolster is designed to resemble the generally suggested MIC-KEY gastrostomy tube.

Indications For Use

AVANOS MIC-KEY Low-Profile Jejunal Feeding Tube is recommended for patients who:

  • Cannot absorb adequate nutrition via the stomach
  • Have intestinal motility issues
  • Have gastric outlet obstruction
  • Have severe gastroesophageal reflux
  • Are at risk of aspiration
  • Have had prior esophagectomy or gastrectomy

Contraindications

Include, but are not limited to:

  • Ascites, Colonic interposition, Portal hypertension, Peritonitis, Morbid obesity

Possible Complications

  • Skin breakdown, infection, hypergranulation tissue, Stomach/duodenal ulcers, Intraperitoneal leakage, pressure necrosis, Perforation, intussusception

Important Notes

  • Do not use if the package is damaged or the sterile barrier is compromised.
  • Higher perforation risk in patients <10 kg.
  • For enteral nutrition/medication only.

Placement

  • Percutaneous under fluoroscopic or endoscopic guidance
  • Replacement via established stoma tract

Key Cautions

  • Gastropexy must be performed before initial placement.
  • Identify the site, dilate, and measure the stoma tract.
  • Tube may be trimmed (smooth, blunt cut); jejunal tip must extend 10–15 cm beyond the ligament of Treitz.
  • Never use a retention balloon as a gastropexy device (risk of rupture).

Balloon Maintenance (Check Weekly)

  • Use slip-tip syringe → fully withdraw water → compare to prescribed volume.
  • If low: refill with withdrawn water + add amount needed.
  • Wait 10–20 min and recheck. Repeated loss = leaking balloon → replace tube.
  • If the balloon ruptures/tube dislodges: tape in place and contact the physician immediately.
  • Document date, time, volumes.
  • ONLY use sterile or distilled water (never saline or air).
  • Use the exact prescribed volume:
    • Over-inflation → lumen obstruction or reduced balloon life
    • Under-inflation → inadequate fixation

Balloon Longevity

Silicone balloons typically last 1–8 months (varies with medications, water volume, gastric pH, and care).

MRI Safety Information

MR Conditional

  • 1.5 T or 3 T
  • Max spatial gradient ≤ 1,960 G/cm (19.6 T/m)
  • Whole-body SAR < 2 W/kg (Normal Operating Mode)
  • Max temperature rise < 1.3 °C after 15 min scanning
  • Image artifact < 45 mm (3 T, gradient echo)

Warning

Single-use device. DO NOT reuse, reprocess, or resterilize. Doing so may:

  • Alter biocompatibility
  • Compromise structural integrity
  • Cause device failure
  • Risk contamination/infection → patient injury, illness, or death
