Indication:
Bioteque Ring Pessary is a medical-grade support device designed to provide non-surgical management for mild first-degree uterine prolapse and cystocele. Available with or without a supporting membrane, this flexible ring pessary offers a comfortable and effective solution for women seeking pelvic organ support and symptom relief. Its anatomical design helps maintain proper positioning of pelvic structures while promoting comfort and ease of use. Ideal for conservative treatment, the Bioteque Ring Pessary can help delay or prevent surgical intervention while supporting daily comfort and pelvic health under medical supervision.
CONTRAINDICATION:
Pessaries are contraindicated in patients with acute genital tract infections, pelvic infections, or in individuals who may not comply with follow-up care instructions.
PROCEDURE:
Proper fitting requires trying multiple sizes to determine the correct pessary size. The Pessary Fitting Set is an essential tool for accurate selection. Physicians may recommend estrogen therapy and/or lubricants prior to insertion to enhance comfort and ease of placement.
- Perform a routine pelvic examination before fitting or inserting a pessary to determine the appropriate size. The pessary folds easily across its largest drainage holes for simple insertion and removal. It should fit securely without causing pressure or discomfort.
- Compress the pessary gently and insert it through the introitus. Once inside, allow it to expand naturally to its normal shape.
- For Incontinence Ring, Ring with Knob, or Ring Pessary models, fold along the axis across the drainage holes, ensuring the crescent points downward.
COMMON USES OF PESSARIES
- Assists in obstetric diagnosis and therapy.
- Used to improve or restore urinary continence.
- Aids in evaluating the necessity of pelvic surgery.
- Helps relieve back pain caused by uterine retroversion.
- An effective non-surgical alternative for pelvic support.
- Helps delay or eliminate the need for surgical intervention.
- Provides relief for cystocele (bladder prolapse) or rectocele.
- Supports management of uterine prolapse or vaginal wall hernias.
- May help prevent miscarriages by reducing pressure on a weakened cervix.
CLEANING:
- Before first use, wash the pessary thoroughly.
- Rinse with warm water (20–40°C) for 30–40 seconds.
- Apply a mild pH 5–9 soap and gently rub the pessary back and forth about 10 times to create a good lather.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water for one minute; repeat if necessary.
- Rinse again with distilled water for one minute to remove soap residue completely.
- Allow the pessary to air-dry completely before reinsertion.
REMOVAL AND SUGGESTED FOLLOW-UP:
- To remove, insert the index finger into the vagina to locate the rim, then gently pull down and out through the introitus.
- Clean the pessary every one to two days for hygiene and comfort.
- Some users remove their pessary during sexual activity; consult a physician if unsure.
- Discuss long-term care, replacement schedule, and follow-up visits with your healthcare provider.
- Monitor for allergic reactions or irritation within 24–48 hours after initial fitting. Report any discomfort, pressure, or discharge to your physician.
- Regular follow-up visits are recommended to ensure proper fit and continued effectiveness.
CAUTION:
- Do not use the pessary if any visible defect such as cracks or discoloration is noticed.
- Ensure proper positioning by gently moving the pessary to support the uterus, cystocele, or rectocele. A physician should be able to place a finger between the pessary and vaginal wall to ensure comfort and prevent pressure injury.
All pessary types are positioned similarly, though certain styles may require specific placement techniques.
- For Ring Pessary models, rotate a quarter turn after insertion to prevent folding or displacement.

FAQs
FAQs
What is a Pessary?
The pessary is a vaginal prosthesis that has evolved over centuries to become an effective medical device to relieve the stress of uterine or bladder prolapse, cystocele, rectocele, and often improves the symptoms of urinary incontinence.
Pessaries are distributed in a variety of styles, shapes, and sizes. They are perfectly safe, effective, and comfortable for long-term usage.
A pessary is a mechanical device, not unlike the common diaphragm, made of non-toxic medical-grade silicone and used to support the lower pelvis. This material is biologically inert, so allergic reactions are rare. Pessaries can be autoclaved (except donuts) or boiled or sterilized using cold sterilizing agents (all pessaries).
What is the procedure for getting a pessary?
- Visit your doctor to get fitted into the correct type of pessary using the Bioteque pessary fitting set.
- Your doctor will order the correct type and size of pessary via prescription.
What is Genital Prolapse?
Genital prolapse is a general term referring to several conditions that may occur separately or in combination. These include a uterine prolapse (dropped womb), a vaginal prolapse, a cystocele (dropped bladder), a rectocele (dropped rectum), and an entrocele (herniation of the small intestine into the space between the rectum and vagina).
Causes of a Prolapsed Uterus?
A uterine prolapse occurs when the uterus drops from its normal position. The cervix may descend into the vaginal opening. This condition affects approximately 11% of all women, usually in the post menopause years. However, it also occurs in young women, and it may be caused by the childbirth of a large baby when the vaginal walls are damaged.
Multiple deliveries may also weaken the area and lead to a uterine prolapse. Other causes include constipation, obesity, and fibroid tumors. Sometimes in menopause, the ligaments that hold the uterus in place lose some elasticity and strength due to reduced estrogen levels, and this may lead to a uterine prolapse.
Symptoms of a Prolapsed Uterus?
The symptoms of uterine prolapse usually include a feeling of pelvic bulging, heaviness or fullness, and/or lower back pain. These symptoms may worsen with activity and improve with bed rest. When standing, women with a prolapse actually feel as though something is falling out. Other symptoms may include vaginal pain or discharge, incontinence or difficulty urinating, bladder infections, or anal pain.
Pessaries are used to alleviate these symptoms. Not only do pessaries assist in restoring continence by stabilizing the bladder base, but they can also support the pelvic organs in their proper anatomic position in women who have a prolapse, cystocele, or rectocele. In women who are not interested in surgery or in women who are not good surgical candidates, pessaries offer a very viable treatment option.
Will I always have to use this pessary?
Not necessarily. Your vaginal muscles may strengthen to the extent that the pessary is no longer needed. Sometimes pessaries are only required for strenuous activity.
Can a pessary hurt or become uncomfortable?
A properly fitted pessary never causes pain or discomfort.
How often should I remove the pessary?
It is recommended that you remove the pessary daily to clean it using a mild soap and water. If you have difficulty removing it, make an appointment with your healthcare provider for removal and cleaning. Don’t be alarmed if the appointment is weeks away. Pessaries can remain in place from 4 to 12 weeks.
What is my responsibility?
Your responsibility is to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions, wear your pessary, and keep all the follow-up appointments.
Will my pessary set off the alarm at the airport?
Absolutely not.
Can my pessary fall out?
Yes, it can. If your pessary is too small or you need a different type, sometimes it will fall out. Simply clean and reinsert it. If this persists, call your healthcare provider and make an appointment for a different type of pessary.
Can I have sex with my pessary in place?
Yes, you can. If you want to remove it, then do so.
Will the pessary prevent pregnancy?
Absolutely not.
