Antiperspirants and Deodorants

Antiperspirant vs. Deodorant: Which One Do You Need?

Antiperspirants and deodorants solve two different problems, even though they're often sold as one combined product. Antiperspirants contain an active ingredient - usually an aluminum compound - that temporarily blocks sweat glands to reduce how much you sweat. Deodorants don't stop sweat at all; they neutralize or mask the odor caused by bacteria breaking down sweat, often using ingredients like baking soda.

If wetness and heavy sweating are your main concern, an antiperspirant (or combined antiperspirant/deodorant) is the better fit - look for "clinical strength" formulas for stronger sweat control. If odor is your only concern and you don't mind sweating normally, a deodorant-only product will do the job. For sensitive skin, unscented and aluminum-free options (Vanicream, Idelle Labs Unscented) are worth considering, since fragrance and certain active ingredients can cause irritation for some people.

You'll find these in a few formats: solid sticks are the most common and mess-free; roll-ons apply liquid directly for even coverage; sprays and aerosols dry quickly and work well for larger areas.
