Tracheostomy Tubes
Tracheostomy Tubes | Effective Airway Management
A tracheostomy is a surgical opening in the neck that leads directly into the windpipe (trachea), allowing a tracheostomy tube to be inserted for breathing support. This procedure, known as a tracheotomy, is performed when a patient’s airway needs to be kept open due to conditions like trauma, obstruction, or the need for long-term mechanical ventilation.
Types of Tracheostomy Tubes Available
Tracheostomy tubes come in various types to suit different medical needs. Cuffed tracheostomy tubes feature an inflatable cuff that forms a seal in the trachea, preventing air leakage and aiding mechanical ventilation. In contrast, cuffless tracheostomy tubes allow air to flow around the tube, making speech possible for some patients. The inner and outer cannula components are key to the function of the tracheostomy tube, with the outer cannula keeping the stoma (opening) secure, while the removable inner cannula facilitates cleaning, promoting hygiene and reducing the risk of blockages.
