MIC-KEY Low-Profile Gastric-Jejunal Feeding Tube is an integrated system designed for both enteral feeding and gastric drainage. It is placed into the stomach through a gastric stoma, where a low-profile external support and an inflatable balloon secure it in place within the stoma tract. The external bolster includes two clearly labeled ports: "JEJUNAL" and "GASTRIC." Each port contains a one-way valve that opens when the appropriate MIC-KEY Extension Set is attached. The JEJUNAL port directs nutrition into the small intestine, while the GASTRIC port enables stomach decompression using gentle suction or gravity. A third port labeled "BAL" is used to inflate or deflate the retention balloon.

Indications for Use

AVANOS MIC-KEY Gastric-Jejunal Feeding Tube is recommended for patients with:

• Poor gastric absorption/motility issues
• Gastric outlet obstruction
• Severe gastroesophageal reflux
• Aspiration risk
• Prior esophagectomy or gastrectomy

Contraindications

Include but are not limited to:

• Ascites, Colonic interposition, Portal hypertension, Peritonitis, Morbid obesity

Possible Complications

• Infection, perforation, hemorrhage
• Aspiration, intussusception
• Skin breakdown, pressure necrosis
• Intraperitoneal leakage, hypergranulation tissue
• Stomach/duodenal ulcers

Important Notes

• Do not use if package damaged or sterile barrier compromised.
• Higher perforation risk in patients <10 kg.
• Used tubes are biohazard – dispose per local regulations.

Placement

• Percutaneous (fluoroscopic or endoscopic guidance)
• Replacement via established tract (guidewire may be used to maintain tract)

Key Cautions

• Gastropexy must be performed before initial placement.
• Stoma tract must be dilated and measured.
• Jejunal tip should extend 10–15 cm beyond ligament of Treitz.
• Never use balloon as gastropexy device (risk of rupture).

Balloon Maintenance (Check Weekly)

• Use Luer slip syringe → withdraw all water → compare to prescribed volume.
• If low: refill with withdrawn water + add required amount.
• Wait 10–20 min and recheck. Repeated loss = leaking balloon → replace tube.
• If balloon ruptures/tube dislodges: tape securely and contact physician immediately.
• Document date, time, volumes.
• ONLY use sterile/distilled water (never saline or air).
• Exact volume:
  • Over-inflation → lumen blockage / shorter balloon life
  • Under-inflation → poor fixation

Balloon Longevity

Silicone balloons typically last 1–8 months (varies with medications, water volume, gastric pH, and care).
