Sterile Product
The MIC Silicone Jejunal Feeding Tube has been introduced into your stomach via the abdominal wall. It provides nourishment just beyond the stomach, in the small intestine. This tube allows your body to take in the food and fluids it requires. Your doctor has chosen the appropriate tube for you and has given you instructions for its care and maintenance. You have also been given instructions for your meals and medicines, which will be provided via tube. Follow the directions exactly and never use another diet or medicine.
MIC Bolus Gastrostomy Feeding Tube is utilized for patients who are on a bolus feeding regimen. It has medical-grade silicone construction for visibility and drapability, and an inflatable silicone internal retention balloon. Features a Secur-Lok external retention ring, which is designed to allow air to circulate the stoma site and reduce tube pressure 360 degrees from the sides of the stoma wall.
Features
- Medication port.
- Gamma Sterilized.
- Radiopaque stripe.
- Universal feeding port connector.
- FDA approved and CE marked.
- Secur-Lok external retention ring.
- Medical-grade silicone construction.
- Inflatable silicone internal retention balloon.
- Trimmable distal tip - from the distal end to the balloon tip.
Care and Use
The MIC Jejunal Feeding Tube must be cared for daily. Care is simple, consisting mainly of keeping the tube and skin around the tube (stoma) clean and dry.
Keep the following supplies on hand to make your cleaning task easier:
- Soap and water
- Cotton-tip swabs
- Tissue
- Diet soft drink for use as a cleaning solution
- A disposable syringe
- Clean hands
Maintenance of the MIC Jejunal Feeding Tube
Inspect the skin around the tube (the stoma) and the tube routinely before feedings to make sure they are clean. Lift the edges of the SECUR-LOK* Ring and gently clean the skin around the tube (stoma) using cotton-tip swabs or a soft cloth and warm, soapy water.
If the skin around the tube appears red or irritated, consult your physician at once. Always wash your hands with warm, soapy water before touching your tube.
Care and Use
Inspect and clean the tube.
Clean and dry the outside of the tube and both sides of the SECUR-LOK Ring using cotton-tip swabs. The SECUR-LOK Ring can be cleaned in place, or you can slide the ring up the tube for cleaning.
If the skin around the tube (stoma) appears red or irritated, consult your physician at once. Flush the tube.
After every use, flush the tube with 20 ml to 30 ml of water for adults and 10 ml to 15 ml for children or infants. The tube should be clear of medicine or feeding solutions. Wipe down the feeding port and its closure using a swab or soft cloth to remove any build-up of oils or feeding materials. If the patient is on continuous feeding, the tube should be flushed at least three times daily.
Avoid puncturing any part of the MIC*Jejunal Feeding Tube. A patient or caretaker should not attempt to change this tube.
Problem Solving
| Problem | Cause | Remedy |
| Gastric leakage | The SECUR-LOK Ring is not properly adjusted or the balloon is not against the stomach wall. The balloon is underinflated. | Check the SECUR-LOK Ring adjustment: 1 mm to 2 mm (thickness of a dime) away from the opening. If the SECUR-LOK Ring is properly adjusted, add water in small increments (1 ml to 2 ml) to the balloon. Water can be added as the stomach size and balloon volume will allow: 20 ml FOR STANDARD VOLUME BALLOON INFLATION, 5 ml FOR LOW VOLUME BALLOON INFLATION. Make sure that the skin around the tube (stoma) is clean and dry. Wait 15 minutes and check to see if the problem has been corrected. If the problem has not been corrected, notify your physician. |
| Feeding tube disconnects | Build-up of oily deposits. | Keep the feeding port and the feeding bag connector clean. Remove oily build-up with a diet soft drink. Use a tiny amount of this solution on a cotton-tip swab, and clean the top two inches of the inside of the tube. |
| SECUR-LOK Ring slips | Build-up of skin oils or other lubricants on the tube. | Clean the tube. Wash the tube with warm, soapy water. If oil remains, clean the tube with a small amount of diet soft drink. After cleaning, re-adjust the SECUR-LOK Ring, 1 mm to 2 mm (about the thickness of a dime) away from the skin, and make sure the balloon is up against the stomach wall. DO NOT APPLY EXCESSIVE TENSION. Check in one hour to be sure that the SECUR-LOK Ring is still holding the tube properly in place. If the problem has not been corrected, notify your physician. |
| Tube decreasing in length | Oily build-up on the tube is resulting in the SECUR-LOK Ring not holding. | Clean the tube and the SECUR-LOK Ring following the instructions in #3 above. |
| The tube is increasing in length. | Balloon under-inflated or inoperative. | Withdraw water from the balloon and compare the volume against the amount originally used to fill the balloon. If the balloon is under-inflated, fill it again to the original volume. Recheck the volume periodically. If size continues to change, notify your physician. The tube may need to be replaced. Notify your physician. |
| Balloon leak or rupture | Variable. | Notify your physician. |
| Patient vomits and/ or aspirates stomach contents | Jejunal tube may have dislodged. The formula rate may be set too high. | Notify your physician. |
| The formula will not flow freely through the jejunal tube | Jejunal tube could be clogged. | Irrigate with 20–30 ml of water (adults), or 10–15 ml (children). If resistance is felt or water does not flow freely, call a physician immediately. |
