What is a Cecostomy Tube?

A Cecostomy Tube, also known as a C-tube, is a medical device used to create a direct channel between the beginning of the large intestine, the cecum, and the external abdominal wall. The cecostomy tube, which is placed within this channel or stoma site, allows a patient and/or their caregiver to administer an enema solution into the large intestine with the intention of producing a bowel movement. Enema solutions are typically composed of a mixture of water, salt, and sometimes other ingredients. Your physician will prescribe the ideal combination based upon your individual situation.

What does ACE mean?

ACE stands for Antegrade (in a forward direction) Continence (with bowel control) Enema (washout of the large intestine or colon). ACE might be recommended for patients who struggle with severe constipation or fecal incontinence (difficulty controlling bowel movement). Conditions which can contribute to severe constipation or fecal incontinence include Hirschsprung's Disease, spina bifida, gastrointestinal dysmotility, malformations, and more. Your healthcare provider may suggest an ACE procedure if other forms of medical intervention, such as dietary changes or traditional/retrograde enemas, are not producing effective bowel movements. An antegrade enema might facilitate a more complete flush of the colon versus a traditional retrograde enema. The ACE procedure can allow for self-administration of enemas, which can increase independence and improve quality of life for some patients. There are two types of ACE procedures: Cecostomy and Appendicostomy.
