Description
Shiley™ Flexible Tracheostomy Tubes are designed to support airway management with features that enhance airflow, insertion efficiency, and patient comfort. Compared to earlier Shiley™ tracheostomy tube designs, these flexible tubes incorporate larger inner diameters, which increase airflow around the outer cannula when the cuff is deflated. In simulated models, airflow has increased by an average of 242%, which may help reduce the effort required for breathing during speaking and weaning processes.
This updated family of Shiley™ flexible tracheostomy tubes includes several design improvements aimed at supporting both clinicians and patients. The tubes are manufactured using a soft material with a non-DEHP plasticizer and feature a transparent flange designed to conform to patient anatomy. The flexible design, beveled tip, and integrated 15 mm connector support efficient insertion and ventilation compatibility, with the option to ventilate with or without an inner cannula.
The TaperGuard™ cuff and thinner cuff profile are designed to support insertion and airflow performance. The cuff design has been shown in simulated models to reduce fluid leakage and apply lower lateral wall pressure on the trachea. Additional features such as color-coded sizing (for disposable inner cannula models) and an expanded size range help simplify identification and accommodate different patient needs.
Key Features:
- Enhanced Airflow Design: Larger inner diameters increase airflow around the outer cannula when the cuff is deflated
- Flexible Tube Construction: Designed to support ease of insertion and compatibility with mechanical ventilation
- Integrated 15 mm Connector: Allows connection to ventilation systems with or without an inner cannula
- Beveled Tip: Helps facilitate percutaneous insertion
- TaperGuard™ Cuff: Designed to help reduce fluid leakage and support tracheal sealing performance
- Thinner, Less Bulky Cuff: Designed to reduce insertion force compared to earlier models
- Soft, Non-DEHP Material: Tube construction uses a non-DEHP plasticizer for flexibility
- Transparent, Anatomical Flange: Soft flange conforms to patient anatomy and helps reduce skin contact pressure
- Improved Flange Ventilation: Flange openings promote airflow to surrounding skin
- Color-Coded Sizing: Disposable inner cannula models include size identification through color coding
- Expanded Size Range: Offers more sizing options for different patient requirements
Using a tracheostomy tube with a reusable inner cannula:
To clean and reuse the cannula, follow these steps:
- Remove inner cannula and place in a prepared solution of neutral detergent and sterile water; allow the secretions to soften
- Use a soft brush to carefully brush away secretions and rinse thoroughly with sterile saline
- Completely dry the inner cannula before placing it back into the tracheostomy tube
